A Message from the Department Chair...

Picture
Welcome to Buffalo… either virtually or hopefully for a visit, a three year stint, or for your career.  I grew up on Long Island and trained in New York City and Boston, but have happily called Buffalo my home for the past 20 years.  Please spend some time looking at our exceptional residency program and academic department - you will be pleasantly surprised.  The UB Emergency Medicine residency program is about developing caring, compassionate, thoughtful Emergency Physicians with outstanding clinical acumen and technical skills.

Buffalo offers a clinical environment with diverse pathology, critical illness and the full range of socioeconomic communities. Our residents rotate though a busy trauma center with a mix of penetrating and blunt trauma and one of the best survival rates in the state as well as the busiest stroke program in NYS with a world-renowned endovascular program, an efficient and collaborative STEMI program, and a full service pediatric hospital with a Pediatric EM fellowship program. Graduates feel confident in clinical decision making, critical thinking, and procedural skills. Our alumni are all over the US and work in every imaginable type of Emergency Department.

Our academic/didactic program is robust. Grand Rounds are interactive with lots of resident and attending input. We bring in speakers from all over the country to keep the program fun, energized and educational. We have fellowships in EMS Medicine and Emergency Ultrasound.  Residents get the full perspective of Emergency Medicine through our academic EDs, our community and rural hospital experiences and EMS/helicopter rotations.

The best and most unique part of UB|EM is our faculty. With 29 faculty members representing 20 different residency training programs, community EM physicians, and an established research-oriented medical school, our residents get a wide variety of opinions, insight, and experience.  The Department of Emergency Medicine fosters a culturally competent, inclusive and respectful environment.  Buffalo itself is a wonderful place to live - friendly, affordable and accessible: perfect for the residency years.  World class restaurants, theater and professional sports, winter skiing, and summer sailing on the Great Lakes make the city is a true hidden jewel.  I hope you spend the time to get to know us, our program, and our city. You will not be disappointed!

Good luck on your search and match.
